Meet David: Auckland Garden Services’ First Franchisee in Warkworth & North Rodney
At the beginning of 2026, Auckland Garden Services reached a pretty important milestone. David came on board as our first franchisee, taking on the Warkworth and North Rodney area.
For us, it was the first step in growing Auckland Garden Services through locally owned and operated territories. For David, it was a chance to swap much of his previous corporate working life for something very different.
More time outdoors, more time working locally, and a business built around an area he already knows well.
David now provides lawn mowing and garden maintenance throughout Warkworth, Matakana, Omaha, Snells Beach, Wellsford and the wider North Rodney area.

A Change from Corporate Life
Most of David’s working life was spent in the corporate world.
Things started to change after he moved to Rodney and bought a lifestyle property.
Anyone who has owned a larger property will know how quickly the outdoor jobs add up. There is always grass to cut, something that needs trimming, gardens that need attention or wood that needs gathering for winter.
David found that he genuinely enjoyed it.
There is a certain satisfaction that comes from spending a few hours outside and being able to see exactly what you have achieved by the end of it. A lawn is tidy, an overgrown section is under control, or a garden that looked neglected suddenly looks cared for again.
The interest was not completely new either. David had been mowing lawns since he was young, starting with the family backyard.
Over time, what had always been a familiar job became something he could see himself doing professionally.
Why Warkworth and North Rodney?
David lives in the area, so North Rodney was a natural fit.
His territory runs from around Puhoi northwards to the Auckland regional boundary beyond Wellsford. That includes a broad mix of communities and property types, from residential homes in Warkworth through to lifestyle properties, coastal sections and rural properties.

Regular lawn mowing is one of David’s main services.
For some customers, that might mean a standard residential lawn every couple of weeks. For others, it could be a larger property that takes considerably more time and equipment to maintain.
The goal is not complicated. It is about keeping lawns looking tidy and stopping them from getting to the point where mowing becomes a major job.
A regular schedule also takes one recurring task off the property owner’s list.
That becomes especially useful during the warmer months when grass can grow quickly and a lawn that looked fine a week ago suddenly needs attention again.

Garden Maintenance as Well
Of course, the lawn is only one part of the property.

For a lot of customers, it makes sense to have the lawn and garden looked after together. Instead of mowing the lawn but leaving everything around it getting progressively more overgrown, the whole outdoor area can be maintained as part of the same service.

One of the reasons we like the franchise model is that the person servicing the property is also building their business in that community.
David is not being sent up from another part of Auckland for the occasional job. Warkworth and North Rodney is his area.

Over time, a local operator gets to know the properties on their round. They know which lawns grow particularly quickly, which areas tend to become overgrown, when certain hedges are likely to need attention and what a customer expects their property to look like.
It becomes less about arriving, doing one isolated job and leaving.

Although a lot of David’s work is residential, Auckland Garden Services also works with landlords, property managers and commercial customers.

The First Auckland Garden Services Franchise
David also has the distinction of being the first person to join Auckland Garden Services as a franchisee.
That makes Warkworth and North Rodney an important area for us.
It is where we have started putting the wider franchise model into practice.
The idea is to combine local ownership with the systems and support of Auckland Garden Services. Each franchisee can focus on building strong relationships in their own territory while still being part of a wider Auckland network.
